Limb 4: Pranayama & Koshas How is your breath? No, seriously, this is a powerfully contemplative question. Breath truly and remarkably affects YOUR life energy ("prana"). We will delve into both the modern science and ancient tradition of breathing. Limb 4: Pranayama & Koshas delves into both the sacred traditions of breathwork and the subtle energy bodies (koshas) and also the physiology (Breath book by James Nestor recommended).
The breath flows in and just as it turns To flow out, there is a flash of pure joy -- Life is renewed. Awaken into that. ... As the breath is released and flows out, There is a pulse as it turns to flow in. In that turn, you are empty. Enter that emptiness as the source of all life. ~ Radiance Sutras 1
Although we place much importance on postures in yoga practice, it is breathing that holds the key to healing, transformation and awareness. It is useful to remember that the body can remain without food for weeks, without water for days, but without breath for only minutes. We encourage students to be aware of breathing throughout yoga practice and to cultivate a regular meditation and contemplation practice that includes breathing exercises and awareness.
There is an intimate connection between breath and mind. A calm mind is correlated to calm breathing. An erratic mind comes with erratic breathing. We use breath as a continual reminder to live with a calm clear mind, and a sense of balance.
